Abstract

Rose oxide 2-(2'-methyl-1'-propenyl)-4-methyl-tetrahydropyran is obtained by pyrolysis of 3-chloro-2,6-dimethyl-1-octen-8-ol, pref. at temps. above 150 degrees C. Rose oxide, useful in perfumery for imparting to artificial geranium oil the odour qualities of natural oil of geranium, in obtained from inexpensive readily available materials. 3-Chloro-2,6-dimethyl-1-octen-8-ol is obtained by the chlorination of citronellol.
