Abstract

[alpha] - (1 - Aminoethyl) - m - methoxybenzyl alcohol, present at least partially in (-)-erythro configuration, and salts thereof are prepared by reducing a compound of the formula (R1=OH and R2 = H or R1+R2=O R3 = H, OH, PhCH 2 R4'5 = H, PhCH 2 provided that at least one of R4'5 = PhCH 2 when R1 = OH) or an acid addition salt of a compound of Formula (II), optionally followed by isolation of the erythro form, resolution and/ or salt formation, compounds of Formula (III) and compounds of Formula (II) in which R1 = OH being present at least partially in (-)-erythro configuration. The preparation of starting materials of Formul[mu] (I), (II) and (III) and of m-methoxyphenyl ethynyl carbinol and [alpha]-acetyl-m-methoxy. benzyl alcohol is described. The compounds of the invention are hypertensive agents and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them, with or without other (unspecified) active ingredients, in association with a carrier.
