Abstract

Novel 1,3,4-thiadiazoles having the general formula in which R and R 1 each represents an alkyl group that may be halogenated are prepared by treating a compound of the general formula in which R and R 1 are as defined above with an oxidizing agent at a temperature within the range of 10 to 120 C. The oxidizing agent may be hydrogen peroxide, a percarboxylic acid, potassium permanganate, nitric acid or chromic acid. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent such as acetic acid and acetone or acetic acid and aqueous sulphuric acid.
