Abstract

A circumferentially extending gap in the outer thermoplastic covering of an article is filled by placing a mould of low thermal conductivity around the article so that at least one channel is defined at the gap by the space between the mould and the article, passing a gas at elevated temperature through the channel via an inlet and outlet port to melt the adjacent thermoplastic material, injecting heated thermoplastics material through the inlet until it passes through the outlet, closing the outlet, maintaining pressure on the injected thermoplastics material while it sets and removing the mould. As shown the article 6 with thermoplastics coverings 2 and 3 has mould 4 surrounding the gap, a groove 5 in the mould easing the flow of gas and thermoplastic material from the inlet port 7 to the diametrically opposite outlet port (not shown) the heated materials passing above and below the pipe. The mould is preferably made of a ceramic material, the heated gas is or contains nitrogen and the inlet port has a changeover valve permitting the ingress of either gas or thermoplastic material. The process may be used for attaching new portions of thermoplastic outer sheath to an electric cable.
