Abstract

In a cell for the electrolysis of salt solutions using a mercury cathode in which mercury is Introduced through a mercury inlet at the base of and extending substantially the full width of a transverse wall 14 of the cell, means are provided for supplying the salt solution in a descending laminar flow along substantially the entire inner surface of the transverse wall, so that the salt solution on reaching the mercury introduced serves to wash the upper surface of the mercury adjacent the said wall. As shown, acidified brine 20 is supplied from passageway 18 and flows into the cell through a passage 19 at the upper part of the wall, flowing down the wall surface without mixing with the electrolyte until it reaches the mercury surface. The brine inlet 19 may be a continuous gap across the width of the wall or it may be a plurality of gaps in line, Fig. 5 (not shown).
