1,147,261. Mercury cathode electrolytic cells. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Jan.23, 1967, No.3381/67. Heading C7B. An electrolytic cell having a flowing mercury cathode comprises a cathode base-plate 24 over which flows the mercury; a composite anode structure comprising a graphite block 28 which has a surface 48 facing said cathode, and a top member 64 spaced from said graphite block and adjoined thereto by side and end members 54, 56 at least along the periphery of said granite block to define a compartment between said top member 64 and said graphite block, which may be further subdivided into compartments 68..... 76, the block being formed with an array of transversely disposed pairs of slots 78......86 extending across the surface thereof and having communicating means extending between each pair of slots and the compartment 68.... 76, said pairs of slots being spaced apart between 5 and 12 inches, the spacing between the slots being between 1 and 3 inches and the width of said slots being between # and 3/16 inches; means for withdrawing gas from said compartment; inlet and outlet means for passing electrolyte through the cell and means for spacing the anode and cathode in predetermined relationship. The amalgam withdrawn from the cell may pass via an amalgam level controller (14) and an amalgam decomposer (16) to be returned to the cell by pump (41) Fig. 1 (not shown). The anode may rest upon a gasket separator (36) which produces the predetermined inter-electrode gap.
