Abstract
1437472 Mercury cathode cells IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 April 1974 [17 May 1973] 23536/73 Heading C7B Build up of thick Hg deposits (Hg "butter") on a brine cell base-plate is reduced by dispersing intermittently or continuously in the flowing amalgam at one or more stations along the flow line thereof, water or an aqueous medium, without interrupting electrolysis. The electrolyte may be the liquid dispersed, e.g. by providing an inclined baffle, a roller or an electromagnetic ultrasonic transducer across the electrolyte/amalgam interface. If the latter is used, the transducer may be outside the cell and be provided with a row of rods which are dipped into the cell through the lid, allowing a single transducer to service a plurality of cells. Alternatively, dispersion may be achieved by jetting water or brine against or below the amalgam surface, or by dispersing these liquids in Hg returning to the cell from a denuder. In the latter case, inherently wet Hg from the denuder may be tapped off from the main recycle line and injected downstream in the cell. Additional water or brine may be incorporated in this Hg by injecting it at the Hg recycling pump or by passing either the main recycle stream or the tapped off portion thereof through a mechanical emulsifier.
