Abstract

Gas cushion apparatus for supporting sheets or ribbons of material such as glass at a temperature at which the glass is plastically deformable comprises a plenum chamber 2 formed with transverse rows of apertures 3 through which the gas passes to chambers 4 which are defined by the upper surface of the plenum chamber and transverse hollow members 16 located between transverse walls 10a, 10b. From the chambers 4, the gas passes through transverse apertures 5, 5a between the members 16 and the walls 10a, 10b to the underside of the material 7. Transverse exhaust apertures 10 are formed between the walls 10a, 10b and lead through apertures 12 into ducts 11 connected through apertures 13 to a discharge chamber 14. Each exhaust aperture is separated from an adjacent one by a pair of openings 5, 5a. Each hollow member 16 is formed with a duct 17 which may be connected by pipes 18 to a source of water, air or steam by which the surface of the support bed can be heated or cooled. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the support bed is formed as a single casting. The support bed may be inclined and may be curved to support a curved sheet or ribbon of glass. Alternatively, the bed may be flat at the starting end and become curved in the direction of travel for shaping a curved sheet or ribbon. The gas cushion may be produced with different gases at any desired temperature and successive parts of the cushion may be fed with gas at graduated temperatures. A further cushion apparatus may be provided above the sheet or ribbon so as to apply treatment simultaneously to both sides.
