Abstract
The temperature of a hot luminous gas which may or may not be burning is determined by measuring the intensity of radiation from the gas at the spectral line of an element introduced into the gas, e.g. sodium, by means of an instrument previously calibrated against a standard lamp. Radiation emitted by a gas flame G enters a dispersion instrument 1 and radiation at the specific wavelength, is received by a photo-multiplier 2 operating a recorder 3. The arrangement is calibrated by a standard strip light source G fed by a variable current supply 5 where radiation is projected into the dispersion instrument, by a mirror 8 moved on to the optical axis.
