Abstract
1,180,362. Radiation absorption flame analysis. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 19, 1968 [June 22, 1967], No. 29242/68. Heading G1A. In a method and apparatus for determining the concentration of an element by introducing it in its vapour state into a flame, and measuring the absorption by the flame of electromagnet radiation of a characteristic wavelength, the flame is burnt in an atmosphere having a pressure less than atmospheric and preferably less than 1 cm of mercury. The burner may be a slit burner and the radiation beam may be passed many times through the flame by a system of confocally arranged mirrors. A pre-mixed or diffusion flame may be used, and the low pressure may be achieved by a vacuum chamber and a pump. A lamp emitting light at the characteristic frequency of a single line may be used, or a lamp emitting a continuous spectrum may be used to simultaneously determine the concentration of a number of elements. Determining the concentration of iron in an iron carbonyl solution in benzene is exemplified.
