Abstract
A heat-insulating refractory sleeve of fibrous organic material, granular refractory material and a binder has a gap extending from one end to the other so that it can be compressed to narrow the gap for insertion in the top of an ingot mould or in a hot top or riser. Expansion of the sleeve due to its own resilience and/or that of a spring or springs inserted into it or incorporated in it during fabrication causes it to be held in position. The sleeve may be of a broken circular or rectilineal, e.g. polygonal, crosssection and may be frusto-conical. The gap may be angled to the axis or curved and formed by removal of a thin sector from a whole sleeve. Refractory such as sand is mixed with fibrous organic material such as paper pulp and (say resin) binder to form the refractory composition for the sleeve asbestos or slag wool or other fibrous refractory may be included to provide resilience. Specifications 960,474 and 888,857 are referred to as describing relevant compositions. The gapped sleeve may include an outer layer of bonded inorganic fibrous material such as calcium aluminosilicate.
