Abstract

The U 238 isotope content of a uranium component is determined by counting the #-radiation having an energy greater than a threshold, which is at least 300 kev and preferably 500 kev. A uranium sample 18 emitting [alpha], # and y radiation is in contact with a probe A comprising a silicon diode #-detector 12 insensitive to y-radiation which is contained in a #-radiation absorbing housing 14 and protected from [alpha]-radiation and light by an aluminium filter 17. The counting circuit B comprises an amplifier 26, adjustable threshold device 28, pulse shaper 30, integrator 32 and indicator 34. The integrator can be replaced by a more accurate counter if desired and the whole arrangement is calibrated against components with a known U 238 content.
