Abstract
1,092,956. Moisture content investigation using neutrons. REPUBLIC STEEL CORPORATION. Jan. 4, 1965 [Jan. 8, 1964], No. 341/65. Heading G1A. To determine the moisture content of a substance, which as described is sinter mix travelling along a conveyer, a source of fast neutrons and gamma rays is positioned to irradiate the substance. A slow neutron detector is provided to give an output dependant on the moisture content of the substance present in a monitored volume and a gamma detector to give a second output dependant on the mass of substance present, the two outputs being combined to produce a signal representative of the percentage water content of the substance. The device may be constructed as a C-shaped frame having a radium beryllium source at one extremity and two sets of parallel-connected detectors at the other. Boron trifluoride proportional counters are used as thermal neutron detectors and geiger tubes as gamma detectors. The C-frame is mounted for movement from a measuring position in which it encompasses a conveyer carrying sinter-mix to a withdrawn position in which calibration can be effected or corrected. A periodic recalibration cycle may be arranged to occur automatically in which the frame is withdrawn from the conveyer, zero and standard calibration samples inserted sequentially and the circuit recalibrated, and then the frame returned to its operative position. It is preferred to arrange the circuit so that electrical standards corresponding to normal moisture content and mass are used and only deviations from these standard values used to derive the final output. In such a system the device may check itself after each calibration to see if it gives a value within the expected range. If it does not do so a warning light is illuminated to indicate the need for a further calibration operation. The output of the device may control a device adding water to the mix in such a way as to keep the water content constant. Circuitry and constructional details are described.
