Abstract

A pattern mechanism for a flat machine comprises an member displacable towards the ends of needle jacks and having means controlled at the distates of a pattern and held by electromagnets for selectively preventing their contact with the jacks. The displacable member 1 carries two rows 2, 3 of apertures oppositt needle jack 13. The apertures are selectively coverable by pivoted levers 5 actuated by electromagnets 9. Selected jacks are moved on displacement of member 1 by the surface 12 of levers covering selected apertures. The remaining jacks pass through the apertures. The levers may be locked in the positions shown. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 levers 21 pivotally mounted on member 27 are pivoted towards holding magnets 29 by cams 26 fixed to shafts 25. To prevent stray magnetic flux reaching the jacks the levers may include a non-magnetisable insert adjacent the jacks, or may be non-magnetisable with a magnetisable insert opposite the magnet. Alternatively the jacks may be non-magnetisable. The member 27 is of non-magnetic material. In a further modification the electromagnet influences a coupling connecting a drive to the members covering the apertures. To ensure the lever will fall away from the magnet when released it may be de-magnetised when held, by a pulse of opposite polarity or an alternating current of decreasing strength in the magnet, or a pulse applied to a second winding. The electromagnets may be controlled by perforated cords or film, or magnetic tape. The perforations required for each course may be arranged in several rows across one narrow cord.
