Abstract

A laminate is produced by (i) placing a layer of a copolymer of at least a major proportion of ethylene and a minor proportion of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, between two thin metal layers, (ii) applying pressure, (iii) cooling and (iv) pressing between driven rolls to reduce the total thickness. In step (ii) either heat and pressure are applied to a lay-up, or a hot extruded layer and metal layers are passed into the nip of a roll pair. The polymer may be applied from solution to one metal layer and cured before applying the other layer. Specified metals are aluminium, copper, tin and alloys thereof. The acidic component may be present in the copolymer in amount 3-20% by weight: specified acidic components are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid, monomethyl or monoethyl maleate, monomethyl fumarate, maleic anhydride. A minor proportion of an ester, e.g. ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate may also be copolymerized with the above-mentioned components. The metal layers may be 0À2-2 mils thick and the polymer layer may be 0À5-4 mils thick.
