Abstract

828,381. Laminated glass. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Oct. 15, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 32110/57. Class 140. A safety-glass laminate comprises a layer of plasticized polyvinyl butyral bonded on one side to a sheet of glass and on the other side to a sheet of biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate. A further layer of plasticized polyvinyl butyral and a layer of glass may be bonded to the other side of the polyethylene terephthalate sheet. The surface or surfaces of the polyethylene terephthalate sheet contiguous with the layer or layers of polyvinyl butyral is preferably subjected to direct contact with a flame before laminating. In the examples lamination is effected by pressing the layers together at elevated temperatures. A fivelayer laminate having a central layer of polyamide is described for purposes of comparison, as also are surface-treatments of the polyethylene terephthalate with nitric acid, aqua regia, and solutions of potassium permanganate, chromic acid in water and chromic acid in sulphuric acid in place of the flame treatment.
