Abstract

An electric dry shaver has a detachable shaving head 15, Figs. 3 and 5, which comprises a frame 65 having side walls 66 and end walls 67 forming a rectangular member with a central opening, a comb 68 which extends across the opening and is secured to the walls 66, a pair of cutters 78 each including a plurality of spaced parallel cutting platens which are biased towards the comb by springs 81, Fig. 2, and a cutter support 84 which is detachably secured to the frame 65 to form an enclosure 87 for clippings. The support 84, Fig. 5, is pivoted to the frame 65 by means of a pin 85 received in slots 86 and is latched to a closed position by means of resilient projections (84b), Fig. 7 (not shown). The support can be moved downwardly by means of ears 84c to enable the cutters to be cleaned. Each of the cutters is provided with a drive block 82 having an opening 82d, Fig. 2, for receiving a motor-driven lever 29, the blocks 82 extending through openings in the support 84. The cutting plates are assembled on rods (80), Fig. 8 (not shown). A long hair trimmer 16, Fig. 2, comprises a comb 63 and a cutter 62 which, when a button (55), Fig. 1 (not shown), is moved to the left, is driven from a pin 58, Fig. 3, on the motor armature 21 by means including a link 57, an oscillating bell crank 60, Fig. 2, and a drive member 61. The comb is formed with a central bend 69, Fig. 10, whereby the comb is V-shaped in its disassembled condition, the comb being assembled with the bend 69 below a support bar 72 whereby the comb assumes an inverted W- shaped configuration. Projections 88, Fig. 9, on the walls 66 extend through openings 70 in the comb. The comb openings are bordered by turned-up flanges 71. The radius of curvature of the bend 69 is smaller than that of the bar 72. The bar 72 is formed with a central portion 73, Fig. 5, for engaging and supporting the comb, with conical portions 74 for locating the comb and spacing it from the walls 67, and with mounting portions 75 received in recesses 76 in the walls 67. The thickness of the comb is approximately 0À002 inch. The shaver is provided with a switch 37, Fig. 2, having an actuator 38 an extension 39 of which, when the switch is moved completely to the left, Figs. 2 and 5, engages a latch 40 to enable the shaving head to be removed. An electric motor 17 is enclosed in a housing 12 comprising a pair of members 13, 14, Fig. 3, abutting along a central plane and secured together by screws 44, Figs. 2 and 5, and by interengaging pronged members 46, 47, Fig. 4, integral with the respective housing members, a locating projection 48 extending into a cylindrical recess 50. The inside of the housing 12 is lined with a non-hardening putty-like material 90, Fig. 3, to reduce noise produced by the motor.
