Abstract

In a method of continuously casting steel castings by pouring steels of different chemical composition in at least two jets simultaneously into a mould to form a casting having a peripheral zone of one steel and a core of another steel, the peripheral zone is formed by at least one jet which does not penetrate deeply into the liquid steel in the mould but spreads substantially horizontally near the free surface of the steel in the mould, and the steel for the core is provided in one other jet that penetrates to a greater depth in the liquid steel in the mould in a direction principally confined to the longitudinal axis of the casting. In casting a rectangular slab of steel having a pair of long side walls and a pair of shorter side walls, two jets, one at each end of the mould, are used for the peripheral zone steel and a central jet is used for the core steel. The central jet is formed by a pouring spout that extends below the surface of the liquid steel in the mould and may have additionally two lateral outlets that direct some of the steel parallel to the layer sides of the mould. The two outer jets may also be confined in pouring spouts that direct the steel in a sideways substantially horizontal direction. The steel casting may comprise an unkilled or partly killed steel on the peripheral zone and a partly or fully killed steel in the core, the killing being done by the addition of aluminium, manganese, silicon, vanadium or combinations thereof. The steel tapped from a melting vessel into one or more ladles and then into a tundish having a number of jets and which may have partitioned zones therein. Aluminium may be added to the steel in the tundish, into the jet within the mould, in the form of a wire passed through the wall of a pouring spout, or in a combination of these methods. Alloying elements may also be added to the steel.
