Abstract
A rolling mill or calender comprises a pair of work rolls 17 mounted in chocks 16 with piston- and-cylinder assemblies 18 between the chocks, means responsive to any displacement of the piston relative to the cylinder, caused by displacement of the chocks from a pre-set position, which produces a signal which activates means to restore the chocks to their initial separation. The mill or calender has back-up rolls 13 mounted in chocks 12 and urged together by a screw-down 20 and a piston-cylinder assembly 22 in each housing. Each piston-cylinder assembly 18 positioned between the chocks 16 comprises a piston 26 which bears against the upper chock and a cylinder 28 in a recess 27 in the lower chock. The piston 26 has an armature 34 which passes through a winding 33 mounted on the cylinder. The winding is connected by leads L1, L2 in series with the winding of the adjacent assembly in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. The cylinder is supplied with fluid through a passage 31. The assemblies 18 urge the chocks 16 apart to the required roll separation and one of the arms of the Wheatstone bridge network is adjusted to balance the bridge. Any displacement of the work rolls, i.e. increase in work gauge, unbalances the bridge and a signal is recorded on a meter (42e), Fig. 2 (not shown). The signal is amplified and operates a servo valve (23) which controls fluid flow from a pump (P) to the assembly 22 to compensate for the displacement. An alternative form of assembly 18, Fig. 4 (not shown), comprises a plunger (38) of magnetic material which is displaceable in a coil (39) mounted in non-magnetic material (37), e.g. brass. The resistance of the coil depends on the position of the plunger relative thereto. The effective mill modulus of a mill incorporating the automatic control means above is 500 x 106 1b. sq. inch compared with 25 x 106 1b./sq. inch of a conventional mill.
