Abstract

Adipic acid derivatives are obtained by the hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile, C 1-4 alkyl acrylonitriles and C 1-4 alkyl acrylates using an alkali metal amalgam as reducing agent, wherein the reaction is carried out in a liquid medium comprising ammonia. The reaction is preferably effected at a temperature of - 40 C. to + 30 C. and the reaction medium may be aqueous ammonia in which the ammonia: water weight ratio is within the range of 15: 1 to 0À3: 1 and the amount of the acrylic acid derivative in the reaction mixture is within the range of from 2 to 30% by weight. The ammoniacal reaction medium may also be anhydrous and consist of liquid ammonia in which an ammonium or amine salt is dissolved. In specific examples, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and ethyl acrylate are dimerized to give adiponitrile, dimethyl adiponitrile and diethyl adipate respectively propionitrile, isobutyronitrile and ethyl propionate are obtained as by-products.
