Abstract

A method for producing a low drift invert emulsion spray comprises mixing an aqueous component and an oil base component in a volume ratio of from 1:1 to about 24:1 to form a thin fluid premix, at least one of the components containing a pesticide and at least one of the components containing an emulsifier capable of forming a water-in-oil emulsion, vigorously agitating under a pressure greater than atmospheric in a mixing chamber until a water-in-oil emulsion is formed, passing the emulsion under pressure to a spray-forming nozzle and discharging to the atmosphere. Apparatus for producing the emulsion is specifically described. Specified pesticides are herbicides such as 2, 4-D and 2, 4, 5-T and insecticides such as DDT, Malathion (Registered Trade Mark) and toxaphene. The oil may be a light petroleum distillate, a fuel or diesel oil, kerosene, a crude aromatic distillate or mixed xylenes. The preferred emulsifiers are the long chain fatty amines or salts thereof and the alkanolamides of long chain fatty acids. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,036,956 and 1,128,848.
