Abstract
A bearing which radially and axially supports a shaft is in the form of a cup and has the outer face of its end wall connected to an auxiliary element which may be temporary to facilitate the mounting of the bearing into a housing or may also serve to reinforce the bearing. In an embodiment, an outer race 1, Fig. 1, of a roller bearing has an end-portion 2 which is attached to an auxiliary element 3 by means of a depolymerized rubber, for example, which acts by adhesion and by the elimination of air to cause the attachment. Alternatively, hardened adhesive 5a, Fig. 2, may be interposed between an annular face 8 of the end-portion 2 and an annular face 9 of the auxiliary element 3. The adhesive 5a is easy to deform or shear. In the mounting of a bearing into a bore 18 of a universal joint, a tool 15 pushes the bearing until it abuts an end face 16 of a cross-member 10 and then a second tool 17 spreads the edges of the element 3 to retain the bearing in the bore 18. The cross-member 10 is centered during assembly by means of V -blocks 12 and 13.
