Abstract

A respirator comprises a body part 15 having a mouthpiece 19 sized for insertion into mouth of a user, and an ejector 17 and conduit 63 whereby fluid under pressure may be supplied to the respirator, the fluid passing through the ejector and inducing atmospheric air into the body part and through the mouthpiece to the user. As shown, the fluid (air) under pressure from a source 73 is dispensed in pulses from a control device 13 to a nozzle 57 in the ejector 17, atmospheric air being induced into the respirator through an inlet 49 and passages (65) extending around the nozzle. The inlet 49 also allows the user to exhale through the respirator to atmosphere. The respirator includes a conduit 59 supplying air to a nozzle 31 which sprays a medicament liquid 35 into the airstream. The control device 13 supplies the air from the source 73 to the respirator in a series of pulses, air passing from the source 73 into the conduits 77 and 63 also bleeding through a passage 89 to a space 87 where it moves a diaphragm 83 to close a valve 75 to terminate the pulse. The next pulse is initiated by the user attempting to inspire, the decrease in pressure being communicated through a conduit 109 to a space 99 where a diaphragm 95 causes a valve 105 to relieve the space 87 and allow the valve 75 to open. A valve 91 allows the amount of air supplied in each pulse to be adjusted. In a similar embodiment, Figure 3 (not shown), not provided with a control device 13, the user regulates his air supply by opening or closing an air vent (119) with his thumb. When the vent is open the air under pressure from the conduit 63 passes to atmosphere without inducing air into the respirator or operating the spray device. The respirator may be of rubber or moulded plastics material and is designed so that it may be held in the hand of the user.
