Abstract
1,218,137. Respiratory apparatus. J. M. MAGRATH. 26 July, 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 35766/68. Headings A5R and A5T. Apparatus for administering a pressurised fluid into the body of an air-breathing vertebrate comprises an elongate tubular handle 10 open at one end 24 to the atmosphere and arranged at the other end for communication with the interior of the body of the vertebrate, there being a venturi portion in the handle arranged to cause a reduced pressure at the said other end, and a conduit 34 for discharging the pressurised fluid into the vertebrate, there being valves controlling fluid flow to the conduit and to the venturi portion. As shown, the apparatus includes a supply 18 of oxygen under pressure which is available to the patient via a line 42, a manifold 16, a control valve 20, a conduit 14, an optional container 38, and the tracheal conduit 34. The oxygen is also available via the manifold 16 and a control valve 22 to an inlet 28 arranged in a tube 12 connected to the tracheal conduit 32, it being stated that the injection of the oxygen through the inlet 28 into the tube 12 and from thence to atmosphere through an open end 24 causes a partial vacuum to form in the tube 12 which provides a suction effect at the inlet 88. The tube 12 also has an opening 26 to atmosphere and a valve 40 which may be alternately opened and closed so as to cyclically control the suction effect for causing artificial respiration. The conduit 32 may 'be used to withdraw mucous &c. from the patient and the container 38 may contain a medicament which is entrained in the oxygen supply and acts on any mucous in the patient. In an embodiment (Figure 3, not shown), the conduit 34 (68) is within the conduit 32 (66) and a third connection (64, 70) to the oxygen supply leads to an inflatable cuff (72) on the conduit (66). In a further embodiment (Figure 5, not shown), the conduits 32, 34 are replaced by a face mask (74) and the open end 24 (without a valve 40) may be opened and closed by the hand of the operator. It is stated that the apparatus may be used to induce a cough or to treat an infected uterus.
