Abstract

In a continuous smelting process, sulphide ores and concentrates are introduced substantially continuously into circulating molten material in a smelting zone, the molten material flows substantially continuously to an elongated refining zone wherein an oxygen containing gas is injected into the molten material, at a plurality of points along its flow path, the slag formed is diverted from the smelting or refining zone into a slag separation zone, which is maintained under reducing conditions, the slag flow being counter-current to the matte or metal flow in at least part of the refining zone, metal being with-drawn from the refining zone and slag from the slag separation zone. In the slag separating zone gentle eddying (e.g. in the surface layers of the slag) may be induced by using gas jets or burner flames and a solid reducing agent (e.g. iron pyrites or a carbonaceous reducing agent) may be added. The process may be applied to sulphide ores or concentrates of Ni, Pb or Cu.
