Abstract

Fibre reinforced tubular resin bodies such as telegraph or high-tension poles, are made by casting a liquid phenol formaldehyde-hardener mixture in a mould cavity formed between a conical core 4 and a heated outer mould 6. The reinforcements 1 and 2 are tensioned between fixed pegs 9, at the lower end of the cavity and arms 11, carried by a longitudinally adjustable plate 17, at the upper end of the cavity, contact between the reinforcements themselves and between the reinforcements and the mould or core being prevented by rings 19 and circumferential rovings 5. In operation, the reinforcements are applied over the core whilst it is horizontal, the outer mould placed over the core, and the whole then pivoted to a vertical position (see Fig. D, not shown). The resin hardener mixture is then introduced from a mixing vessel, into the bottom of the mould through an inlet 8, after which the resin is gelled and partially cured, the reinforcements simultaneously being tensioned by movement of plate 17. The core is subsequently removed and the resin then fully cured, after which the finished pole is cooled and removed from the mould.
