Abstract

So that the units of a break-spinning frame can be stopped individually for maintenance, cleaning or the repair of a broken end, each unit comprises two housings, one for the spinning chamber, and one for the combing roller and the outlet through which the spun yarn is withdrawn, the housings being rotatably mounted about parallel axes so that they may be swung apart. The housing 17, Fig. 4 for the combing roller 5 and the yarn outlet 41 which also carries an inlet passage 5 for the sliver, a feed roller, and a separator plate 38, is rotatably mounted on a tube 8 common to all the housings. The housing 14 for the spinning chamber is hinged to the frame at 13, its weight and that of the associated driving- pulley 15 causing the pulley to engage a braking-surface 21 when the housings are separated. The tilt of the housing 17 is limited by a spring-catch 16 mounted thereon which engages the housing 14 and helps to tilt it. When the housing 17 is in tilted position, the drive roller 48 of the combining roller is separated from its drive belt 4 and the drive of the feed roller is disconnected in a manner to be described below. When the housings are to be restored to spinning position, the housing 17 is swung towards the housing 14 a spring-urged pin 49 on the former engaging the housing 14 and tilting it back to working position, where the pulley 15 moves off the braking surface to engage its drive belt 2 before the separator plate 38 enters the spinning chamber. The two housings are held in working position by a catch 57 - 18. The feed roller is driven by gearing from a gear 25 which engages a gear on a drive shaft 6 common to all the units which passes through the tube 8. The gear 25 is one part of a clutch with which the other is held in driving engagement by a spring, but which is withdrawn when a solenoid is energized. The solenoid is in circuit with a feeler, the circuit being open as long as a thread engages a feeler 42 near the thread outlet 41. When the thread breaks or is absent, the feeler closes the circuit to disengage the clutch and stop the feed roller at the same time a signal lamp is switched on. The lamp is disposed within the upper part of the housing 17 the cover of which includes a translucent plate 54 so that it can be seen when the lamp is switched on. A branch circuit across the feeler terminals includes a capacitor and a resistance to prevent sparking, the resistor reducing the voltage across the lamp terminals. The catch 57, 18 can be released manually by a handle 58 to separate the housings and separate the pulleys 15, 48 from their drive belts and move pulley 15 against the braking- surface 21. By thus bringing the spinning chamber to a stop, the delivery of thread is interrupted and the feeler operates to separate the clutch and stop the feed roller.
