Abstract

Crystalline pollucite, Cs2O, Al2O3, 4SiO2, H2O is prepared by mixing colloidal aqueous silica with aqueous caesium and aluminium nitrates, evaporating to dryness and heating to below 1000 DEG C. to decompose remaining nitrates and form an amorphous powder which is then compacted under a pressure of 2.5 tonnes per cm.2 and sintered at 1600 DEG C. In a modification, the calcination is at a temperature below 600 DEG C. (instead of 1000 DEG C.) and the sintering in two constant temperature stages at 970 DEG C. and 1200 DEG C. respectively. In this case, the calcined powder may be activated in a water vapour atmosphere at 100 DEG C. for 15 to 30 minutes. The powder may be ground to a mean particle size of 10m before compacting and sintering.
