Abstract

Feed water from pump 9, pre-heated by heat exchange with boiler water in heat exchanger 6, is fed into the drum 4 of a water tube boiler heated by the exhaust gases of an internalcombustion engine. From the drum 4 the water is circulated by pump 5, in two streams, one stream flowing through steam generating section 2 and back to the drum 4 through line 8, and the other, after heating the feed water in heat exchanger 6, flowing through economizer 3 and back to the drum 4 through line 7. A superheater 1 is provided. The boiler water flow through heater 6 is thermostatically regulated by valve 10 to maintain water entering economizer 3 above a minimum temperature so preventing acid condensation. Variations in steam demand are met by supplying some of the water to the economizer 3 through valve 11 so by-passing the feed water heater 6. This increases the temperature of the water entering the economizer and so reduces the heat pick-up from the exhaust gases. The valve 11 is controlled by the steam pressure in the drum 4. The steam generating section may be divided into four valve-controlled sections in parallel flow (Fig. 2, not shown), to enable one or more of the sections to be cut-off to meet a reduced steam demand. Auxiliary heating means may be provided.
