Abstract

867,891. Forced-flow, waste heat boilers; feedwater heating systems. B.P. TANKER CO. Ltd., and NORRIS, A. May 21, 1959 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 36004/58. Class 123(2) In a waste-heat boiler for extracting, heat e.g. from the exhaust gases of large marine. diesel engines to produce high pressure steam circulation water from a boiler 11, which may be externally fixed, is discharged by a pump 12 for heat exchange with a boiler feed-water heater 14, where its temperature is reduced to a value just above the corrosion temperature of the exhaust gases before being circulated through the coils 23, 24 of a steam generator 17 over which the exhaust gases pass. Steam for superheating is passed from the steam space of the boiler 11 to a heat exchanger 20, and a pump 22 urges feed water through the heater 14 and into the boiler. The system, which is self-balancing can be controlled by bypass valves 16, 19 to automatically adjust the steam pressure which influences the rate of flow of circulation water by controlling a valve 15. The circulation water may also pass through the heating coil of a low pressure evaporator 13 having a by-pass valve 31 controlled by the steam pressure. Low-pressure steam can be obtained from the boiler, or its circulation system, by taking out high pressure steam through a flash evaporator pressure reducing device. A valve 18 is provided for by-passing the heat exchanger 17 when the main I.C. engines are inoperative. In a modification a feed-water heater is arranged on each side of the evaporator, the supply of low pressure steam being augmented by directing some of the high pressure steam through a pressure reducing valve. In a further modification, in which the circulation water flows in parallel through a feed-water heater and an evaporator and in which some of the feedwater, after having been heated in the feed-water heater, is passed to the evaporator, a valve, controlled by the steam pressure is arranged to by-pass some of the feed water directly to the boiler. In an alternative arrangement of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the heater 14 is located in the circuit before the pump 12.
