Abstract
UF6 is reduced to UF4 by a reducing gas in the presence of 0.1 to 3% by weight of ClF3. 1 to 4 times the stoichiometric quantity of reducing gas is used. The UF4/ClF3 mixture and the reducing gas, e.g. H2 or cracked ammonia, are separately preheated to 150 DEG to 400 DEG C. The mixture is introduced first into the upper part of a reactor, at 500 DEG to 600 DEG C., followed by the reducing gas. The uncompacted density of the UF4 is varied, e.g. to 0.1 or 0.5 grams/c.c. by adjusting the amount of ClF3.
