1,158,535. Uranium tetrafluoride. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 14 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 12569/68. Heading C1A. In the process for producing uranium tetrafluoride from uranium trioxide by reducing the uranium trioxide to uranium dioxide with hydrogen and reacting the uranium dioxide with hydrogen fluoride, the reactivity of the uranium dioxide is increased by treating the uranium trioxide with uranyl nitrate solution in a quantity such that the weight of nitrate and water added is 3 to 6% of that of the uranium trioxide. In particular uranium dioxide produced from uranium trioxide produced by the fluidized bed denitration of uranyl nitrate can be made appreciably more reactive by this procedure. The aqueous uranyl nitrate solution may contain 500-600 grams of uranium per litre of solution. The solution may be added at any temperature between room temperature and 110‹ C. and the resulting mixture is stirred for 15-25 minutes or until all the solution has been taken up.
