Abstract
A roof covering comprising a bitumen layer 1 connected to an aluminium, copper, zinc or other metal web 2 is characterized in that lines of weakness either in the metal web, or in its connection to the bitumen layer are provided at spaced intervals along the roof covering to prevent wrinkling upon expansion of the metal. In one example the metal web is thinned out by rolling along lines 3, transverse to the direction of elongation. Alternatively strips of non- adherent material 5 such as silicone or soft petroleum-bitumen are interposed between the bitumen and the metal. The bitumen layer may be reinforced by glass fibre sheet or textile fabric. In an example a web of glass fibre fabric is fed from a roll through a vat containing molten bitumen which adheres thereto and an aluminium web fed from another roll passes through corrugating rollers and the corrugated web is provided with spaced transverse strips of anti-adhesive soft bitumen by means of revolving blades which dip into a container fed with the soft bitumen. The reinforced bitumen and coated metal web are applied against one another to form a composite web which is finally cooled, sand-blasted and trimmed.
