[Class 140] A protective fibrous layer is secured to a metal sheet, plate, or slab by first applying to the metal body a coating of metal in a heated, fluid state, applying the fibrous material while the metal coating is still in a heated, fluid state, and allowing the metal coating to solidify. The fibrous material may be asbestos paper or felt impregnated if desired with asphalt or bituminous composition, and an outer bituminous coating e.g. of asphalt and cotton-seed pitch melted together may be applied thereto after union with the metal body. The metal adhesive may be zinc, tin, cadmium, lead, or an alloy e.g. of tin with lead or cadmium, and may become alloyed with the metal body at the contact face. As shown, steel sheets 18, Fig. 2, are conveyed from a storage tank 17 through a galvanizing bath 20, and immediately on leaving the bath and before the molten zinc coating has solidified, are covered with fibrous layers 26 pressed on by rolls 22 and 23. The fibrous material is drawn from supply rolls in enclosures 25, and around heating rolls 24 to remove moisture. The composite sheet is removed on conveyer 28, carried while still hot through a bath of impregnating material by an upwardly-sloping conveyer 32, Fig. 3, passes through squeeze rolls 34, over conveyer 36, and between coating-rolls 38 and 44 running in tanks 40 and 46 supplied from a tank 42. The heat in the metal coating and the steel sheet burns out a large part of the organic binder usually present in the asbestos paper or felt. Further heat may be applied for this purpose, if desired.
