Abstract
A propulsion unit for use with de-scaling apparatus for pipes comprises two propulsion devices 3, 5 mounted on a shaft 1, and between those devices, a device for centering the unit within the pipe. Each device 3, 5 is substantially circular and is provided with a plurality of rearwardly inclined and angularly, equidistant flexible sectors 56 secured to a plate 38, the peripheral edges of the sectors being adapted to be in contact with the inner surface of the pipe. A space between the sides of adjacent sectors allows the passage of water and the devices 3, 5 are arranged such that by the effect of water under pressure, the sectors are alternately forced abruptly against the plates 38 whereby a succession of blows is impacted to the unit, the said blows acting to increase the propulsive force exerted on the unit. The sectors 56 may be of leather or nylon sheets 48 interleaved with steel plates and have secured thereto a heavy plate 50 the plates 38 are formed with holes leading into radial chambers having outlets 41, the latter in the device 3 being fitted with nozzles 42. The centring devices each comprise rollers 16 mounted on flexible blades 15 and consisting of sets of discs each having a zig-zag peripheral rib the arms 15 of one device are angularly displaced relative to the arms 21 of the other device, and the pressure of the rollers against the inner surface of the pipe is regulated by screws 27 which cause interconnected plates 23, 24 to urge the arms 15, 21 upwards or downwards.
