1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in cutting blocks, the general objects of the invention being, (1) to provide guard means for covering the heads or nuts of the bolts which connect the portions of the blocks together, and (2) to present a smooth surface against th sides of the machine on which the cutting blocks are used.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describi g the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a cutting block provided with my invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional View through a guard.
In this drawing the letter A indicates the cutting die or block which is used in die presses for cutting a blank from leather or other sheet material. This block is formed of a plurality of wooden blocks I which are placed in rows and the blocks of each row are connected together by the dovetailed joints 2 and the blocks are held together by the cross rods 3 and the longitudinally extending rods 4. The rods have threaded ends for receiving the nuts 5 and at each end of the device and its side thereof the ends of the rods pass through an elongated plate 6 and the nuts abut the plate. At the ends of the device handle parts I are held by some of the rods by the nuts as shown in Figure 1. At the sides of the device the ends of the rods and the nuts thereon are enclosed in the housings H, each of which is of substantially channel shape in cross section with its side flanges curving inwardly as shown at 8 to engage the rounded side edges of the plate 6.
Thus this housing will cover the ends of the rods and the nuts so that these parts cannot injure the workman or his clothes or the material being out. As is well known it is necessary to adjust the nuts on the rods from time to time to take up the expansion or contraction of the wood of which the device is formed, so that it must be necessary to remove the housings or guards very easily and quickly. This can be done by applying outward pressure by a sharp instrument or the like at the edges 8 so as to remove the device from the plate or strip 6.
Where the handles are not used similar housings or guards can be used covering the ends of the rods and the nuts at the ends of the device.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the claimed as new is:
In a cutting device including a plurality of blocks, rods passing through the blocks and nuts on the outer ends of the rods, plates engaging side portions of the device and through which the ends of the rods pass with the nuts engaging the plates and channel-shaped members removably engaging the plates and covering the ends invention, what is of the rods and the nuts thereon, each channelshaped member having the edges of the flanges curving inwardly and each plate having curved side edges for engagement by the curved edges of the channel flanges each channel-shaped member having its side edges curving inwardly and each plate having curved side edges for engagement by the curved side edges of the flanges said edges being adapted to be removed from engagement with the side edges of the plate by a tool placed in engagement with the curved edges of the flanges to force such edges outwardly.
