Abstract

A lasted upper is prepared for the attachment of a sole by roughening the bottom with a mobile blast apparatus using a supple template which is stretched to the correct shape by clamps on an interchangeable frame and which is pressed against the bottom of the shoe. A lasted upper 8 is mounted on a shaft 2 which can be rotated through 180 degrees from a loading position (not shown) to an operative position as shown. The supple template 18, e.g. of rubber, is held by clamps 18 adjustably mounted on an interchangeable frame 16 which is carried by a box 12. The template rests on a wall of foam rubber 21 so that when the box 12 is moved towards the lasted upper the template is pressed against the bottom of the lasted upper. Blasting nozzles 26, which swivel on a shaft 24 mounted in the box 12, roughens the lasted upper and the increase in air pressure in the box 12 causes the template to bed down on to the upper. The used blasting agent is returned to the blasting apparatus 30 via a tube 32. The box 12 also contains compressed air nozzles 27 which clean the bottom of the shoe of dust and which operate at a higher pressure than the blasting nozzles so that the pressure in the box 12 is increased to stretch the template and so increase the orifice in the template.
