Abstract

High molecular weight polyoxymethylenes obtained by polymerizing anhydrous formaldehyde are stabilized by treatment at the end of polymerization and at 0 DEG to +50 DEG C. with an agent forming stable terminal groups therein. The agent may be added to the polymer mix at the end of the polymerization in the same reactor and its reaction may take place for 3 to 60 minutes. Specified blocking agents are carbon dioxide, carbon disulphide, urea, thiourea, acetic, propionic, phthalic or benzoic anhydride, hydroquinone, and hydroquinone monobenzyl or monomethyl ether. A solvent, e.g. benzene, and n-heptane may be present as may also antioxidants diphenylamine and 4,41-butylidene-bis(6-t-butyl-3-methyl-phenol).
