Abstract

High molecular weight polymers of formaldehyde are stabilized by reacting the polymer in suspension in an inert organic solvent with diazomethane in the presence of boron trifluoride and/or fluoroboric acid as catalyst, or by reacting the polymer with a compound capable of forming alkoxo-acids with the terminal hydroxyl groups of the polymer and then etherifying the alkoxo-acids so obtained with diazomethane. An organic solvent may be present also in the second stage. Tetrahydrofurane and absolute ether are specified solvents, an aluminium triisobutylate the alkoxo-acid forming compound.
