Abstract

Mercury present as dissolved mercury compounds is recovered from a brine having a pH between 0.1 and 10.5, by passing the brine through a bed of anion-exchange material, which adzorbs the mercury as complex anions of mercury, and then eluting the mercury from the exchange material by washing it with a solution of sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid. The brine may be an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, potassium chloride or calcium chloride, which has been circulated through an electrolytic cell having a mercury cathode. The mercury concentration in the brine may be between 0.1 and 1000 parts per million. Examples are given.
