Abstract

The invention comprises the 21-semi-1,2,5,6-tetrahydrophthalate of 3,20-dioxo-21-hydroxy-pregnane compounds unsaturated in ring A, and salts thereof. They may be prepared by reacting the tetrahydrophthalic acid or a functional derivative thereof with the pregnane-21-ols or their reactive functional 21 -derivatives. Salts may be prepared by reacting the 21-semi-esters with, for example, alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates or organic bases such as ethanolamine, di- or tri-ethanolamine, N,N- or N,N1-dibenzyl -ethylenediamine, ephedrine or a -1-phenyl-2 -methylamino-propane. Suitable pregnanes include desoxycorticosterone, aldosterone, 1 -dehydro-aldosterone, cortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisone and prednisolone which may contain 6a -halo, 9a -halo, 16a -hydroxy, 16a - or 16b -methyl and/or 6a -methyl substituents. Detailed examples are provided. The esters and their salts may be formulated as pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers, such as water. Specification 800,889 is referred to.
