Abstract

Un procedimiento para la reducción de óxido de hierro para formar hierro tratando el óxido en un horno con combustible carbonoso, caracterizado por moler primero y llevar el óxido de hierro a la forma de píldoras porosas endurecidas, introducir en el horno dichas píldoras y también el combustible en una forma finamente dividida con un bajo contenido de hidrocarburos y de tal modo que cuando se queme forme un residuo que es infusible y que no sinteriza a la temperatura de reducción del proceso, estando la cantidad introducida de dicho combustible por encima de la requerida para reducir sustancialmente por completo a hierro el óxido de hierro cuando reacciona con él y para convertir el dióxido de carbono, en gran medida, a medida que se desarrolla durante la reacción, a monóxido de carbono, siendo el combustible finamente dividido y su residuo de un carácter que dé una fase interferente entre las píldoras que las impide adherirse entre sí durante la reacción y que permite su separación subsiguiente desde el material fino, introducir también una alimentación de aire limitada en esencia a la cantidad de calor requerida para reducir sustancialmente todo el óxido a hierro, hacer avanzar las píldoras en mezcla con el combustible y con el residuo de combustible en el horno durante un tiempo y a una temperatura suficientes para reducir las píldoras a hierro, y enfriar la mezcla resultante en una atmósfera no oxidante.
