Abstract
In pulping cellulose with white liquor based on Na2S and NaOH, giving black liquor contg. lignin and unreacted Na2S, from which white liquor is recovered by combustion, the novelty is that a gas contg. at least 50 vol.% O2 is passed into the black liquor before combustion. The gas is technically pure O2 or air enriched in O2. It is introduced, pref. under pressure, in an amt. large enough to oxidise the Na2S to Na2S2O3 completely before combustion. ADVANTAGE - Pretreatment with O2 prevents environmental pollution by H2S and SO2 in the waste gas from combustion. In an example, in pulping eucalyptus cellulose, the amt. of black liquor (TS = 16-18%) was 192 cu.m/h, temp. 80 deg.C and Na2S concn. 8 g/l. 74 Ncu.m O2/h were introduced at 7.5 bar gauge, when the temp. rose by ca. 1 deg.C and ca. 1.0 g/l Na2S was reduced. If the total of 1.97 x 10 power4 mole Na2S was oxidised by the wet chemical method, the amt. of Na2SO4 added could be reduced by 50 t/day
