Abstract
Sulphur dioxide is removed from a CO2-free gas mixt., esp. waste industrial gases, by (a) contacting the gas mixt. with an aqs. soln. of an alkali metal hydroxide, (b) treating the formed liquid with an O-contng. gas contng. a greater amt. of O2 than the stoichiometric amt. for converting all the sulphite into sulphate, (c) treating the sulphate soln. with a Ca(OH)2 suspension at 40 degrees C., (d) sepg. the formed gypsum, and (e) contacting the resulting aqs. alkali metal hydroxide soln. with the gas mixt. Provides relatively rapdi SO2 removal and trouble-free operation.
