Abstract

1336899 Processing spent liquor from a polysulphide pulping process COMBUSTION ENG INC 10 June 1971 [11 June 1970] 19993/71 Heading D2W The spent liquor from a polysulphide pulping process is processed for re-use by means of the following steps (see Fig. 1):- (a) after passing through a blow tank and a drum washer with three filter drums operating in an oxygen-free atmosphere the spent liquor is pre-evaporated to a 25-30% solids content, (b) a recycle stream, derived from the carbonating or stripping towers (see steps (d) and (e)), and containing NaHCO 3 is added to the pre-evaporated liquor to reduce p.H, (c) the spent liquor is passed to a soap skimmer, (d) the skimmed liquor is passed down a carbonating tower wherein the Na 2 CO 3 present in the liquor reacts to form NaHCO 3 with CO 2 fed countercurrent to the liquor from a hot carbonate system at atmospheric to 100 psia and 25-100‹C, (e) the carbonated liquor is fed to a vacuum steam stripping tower to remove H 2 S produced, (f) the p.H of the stripped liquor is increased sufficient to prevent deposition of lignin by addition of NaOH and if necessary white liquor, any Na 2 S introduced in the white liquor being converted to Na 2 S 2 O 3 by low level oxidation with air or oxygen in an oxidising tower, (g) the liquor is evaporated to a 50-55% solids content, (h) the liquor has water removed therefrom to a 70% solids content by direct contact with the flue gases from the recovery furnace (see step i) or by means of an air cascade evaporator in which latter case the use of an oxidising tower is not necessary in step (f), (i) the liquor is fed to a recovery furnace with a steam boiler to produce an Na 2 S/Na 2 CO 3 smelt (j) the smelt is dissolved in water and calcium oxide added and the solution reacted in a causticizer to form a white liquor from which CaCO 3 is filtered and used to produce CO 2 in the hot carbonate system and (k) the vapours from the blow tank, digester, carbonate stripping towers and evaporators containing H 2 S are compressed and converted to elemental sulphur which is added to the white liquir to regenerate the polysulphide cooking liquor.
