Abstract

1379101 Removing SO 2 , NH 2 and H 2 S from gases NIPPON KOKAN KK 23 May 1972 [8 June 1971] 24194/72 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from exhaust gases and NH 3 (and optionally H 2 S), is removed from coke oven gases by (a) contacting SO 2 -containing exhaust gases with a first circulating aqueous solution of NH 4 SO 3 , (NH 4 )HSO 3 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 having a pH of 5À8-6À5 to dissolve part of the SO 2 , (b) contacting NH 3 (and optionally H 2 S)- containing coke oven gas with a second circulating aqueous solution of the same ammonium salts having a pH of 6À3-7À0 to dissolve part of the NH 3 (and optionally the H 2 S), (c) introducing part of the first circulating solution into the second circulating solution and at the same time introducing part of the second solution into the first, and (d) withdrawing part of the circulating solutions and introducing water to maintain the total amount of circulating liquid constant. The total conch. of ammonium salts in each circulating solution is preferably 30-40% by wt. The withdrawn solution may be oxidized to convert the sulphite and bisulphite into sulphate which is then recovered. The exhaust gases may be obtained from a boiler furnace or an iron ore sintering process.
