Abstract
A hydrodynamic coupling, especially for the drive of a tractor, has a primary impeller 2 with a catcher-groove 7 and control valves 8 which are connected via control leads 9 to the catcher-groove 7, The inlet channels 10 to the working space 6 of the coupling leave from the catcher- groove. The catcher-groove 7 is subdivided by means of partitions into regions 13, 14 of different sizes, with the control leads 9 to the control valves 8 opening into the smaller regions 14 and the inlet channels 10 to the working space 6 opening only into the larger regions 13. For emptying, only the smaller regions 14 need to be emptied through the control leads 9. The control valves 8 can thereby open earlier and interrupt the flow of power to the traveling drive. Hence it is possible with the power takeoff shaft still running, to use the coupling as a release clutch without actuating the mechanically actuated traveling clutch. The partitions may be radial or in a plane transverse to the coupling axis (Fig 3). There is a permanently open outlet 11 in the impeller 2 and each valve 8 may be closed by a spring (Fig 4) or opened by pressure from centrifugal force.
