Abstract

1 : 2 Diaminobenzene is obtained from 1 : 2-dichlorobenzene or 1-amino-2-chlorobenzene by treating the chloro compound at about 150 DEG C. in presence of copper, with aqueous ammonia, the pressure being maintained throughout at least at about 80 atmospheres. The copper is added as a mixture of a copper salt and metallic copper and preferably in such quantity as to ensure the presence of metallic copper throughout the reaction, to combine with the 1 : 2 diaminobenzene formed. Specification 3966/08, [Class 2], is referred to. According to examples, o-dichlorobenzene, and o-chloraniline are treated with aqueous ammonia in presence of cupric or cuprous chloride and copper, ammonia being passed in to maintain pressures of from 80 to 100 atmospheres for 10 to 20 hours. The product is isolated from its copper compound by acidifying, precipitating the copper as sulphide, and basifying the filtrate. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the product obtained when using somewhat different proportions of aqueous ammonia, cupric chloride, and fragmentary copper.
