A roof skylight is disclosed comprising a transparent roof dome and one or more transparent plane sheets beneath the roof dome, wherein the end surface of the plane sheet or sheets are enclosed by a skirt as a weather shield for the end surfaces.
Background
-
Roof skylights are known in the art comprising one or more transparent roof domes and one or more transparent plane sheets beneath the roof dome, wherein the end surface of the plane sheet or sheets are enclosed by an arrangement, such as a profile covering all end surfaces of roof domes and plane sheets in the roof skylight.
-
It is an objective of the present invention to provide such roof skylight wherein the manufacturing of the skylight can be simplified.
Summary
-
The end surface of the plane sheet or sheets may be covered by a skirt of the roof dome extending towards the roof surface. However, the extend of the skirt should be manufactured adjusted for the specific variant of roof skylight, e.g. the height of the one or more plane sheets and/or the number of roof domes. In order to standardize the production of roof domes with a skirt, an auxiliary skirt clamped to the panel comprising the roof dome and the plane sheet(s) is suggested, where the auxiliary skirt encloses the end surface of plane sheets not enclosed by the roof dome skirt. Hereby it is achieved that one type of roof dome provided with a skirt can be utilised for a variety of different configurations of roof skylights while keeping the end surfaces of the plane sheets shielded from the impact of the weather.
-
Thus, the present invention relates to a roof skylight having a rectangular curb extending upwards from a roof surface and enclosing an upward opening of the skylight, curb supporting a panel, wherein the panel comprises at least one roof dome and one or more transparent plane sheets placed below the roof dome, the panel being fixed to the curb by means of a plurality of fasteners extending through the panel and directly into the curb or into a glazing frame mounted on the curb, wherein at least one of the roof domes comprises a dome skirt integrated with the roof dome, the dome skirt enclosing an outer, upper edge of at least one of the transparent plane sheets and extends towards the roof surface, and wherein the roof skylight further comprises an auxiliary skirt clamped to the panel by means of the plurality of fasteners, the auxiliary skirt extending towards the roof surface from between the dome skirt and an end surface of one of the domes or of one of the transparent plane sheets, the auxiliary skirt enclosing at an end surface of one of the transparent plane sheets, preferably including the end surface of the lowermost transparent plane sheet.
-
The dome skirt extends preferably no further downwards than the lower outer side of the panel, i.e. the lower outer surface of the lowermost transparent plane sheet, such as somewhere between the upper side surface of the upper plane sheet and the lower side surface of the lower plane sheet
The auxiliary skirt extends preferably towards the roof surface beyond an outer, lower edge of the transparent plane sheet closest to the roof surface, such as by at least 8 mm, preferably by at least 12 mm to ensure a proper protection of the end surface of the lowermost transparent plane sheet of the panel.
-
An outer, lower edge of one or more of the transparent plane sheets is preferably closer to the roof surface than a lowermost edge of the dome skirt.
-
The auxiliary skirt is preferably a separate part from the roof dome(s) as well as from the transparent plane sheet(s).
-
The minimal distance between the curb or the glazing frame mounted on the curb, and the auxiliary skirt is less than 12 mm, such as less than 10 mm. By leaving only such narrow opening between the curb and the auxiliary skirt or between the glazing frame and the auxiliary skirt, a minimal natural ventilation of the space between the auxiliary skirt and the plane sheet(s) is obtained, which improves the thermal insulation of the panel.
-
The fasteners comprise preferably a hollow binding screw through which the fastener screws can extend, the hollow binding screws comprising upper and lower bearing surfaces for abutting an upper outer surface and lower outer surface of the panel, respectively.
-
The hollow binding screw is advantageously of the type comprising a female, internally threaded barrel and a male, externally threaded screw, and wherein each of the barrel and the screw have heads providing the upper and lower bearing surfaces.
-
One or more of the roof domes may be made from polycarbonate, alternatively or additionally, one or more of the roof domes may be made from Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).
-
One or more of the transparent plane sheets may be made from polycarbonate, alternatively or additionally, one or more of the transparent plane sheets are made from Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).
-
The panel may be hinged to the curb.
Brief description of figures
-
Examples of the present invention are shown in the figures, of which:
- Fig. 1 is a cross-section of a first embodiment of the present invention,
- Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a second embodiment of the present invention,
- Fig. 3 is a cross-section of a third embodiment of the present invention, and
- Fig. 4 is a cross-section of a fourth embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed description
-
The first embodiment of a roof skylight 1 shown in cross-section in Fig. 1 comprises a panel 2 having a transparent roof dome 3 provided with a dome skirt 4 and two transparent plane sheets 5, 6 made from polycarbonate with air filled channels to improve the thermal insulating effect of the plane sheets 5, 6.
-
The panel 2 is mounted on top of a curb 7 of the roof skylight 1. The curb 7 extends downwards to a roof surface (not shown) with an opening defined therein (not shown), which is enclosed by the curb 7. The upper edge 8 of the curb 7 is enclosed by a top frame 9 that is fastened to the curb 7. The top frame 9 extends down along a part of a sloping outer side 10 of the curb 7 to cover an upper edge of roofing felt (not shown).
-
A plurality of fasteners 11 comprise each a hollow binding screw 12 extending through the panel 2, i.e. the roof dome 3 and the transparent plane sheets 5, 6. Fastener screws 13 extend through the hollow binding screws 12 and into the top frame 9, being a part of a glazing frame. The fastener screws 13 are shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The hollow binding screws 12 comprising upper 14 and lower bearing surfaces 15 for abutting an upper outer surface 16 and lower outer surface 17 of the panel 2, respectively.
-
The hollow binding screw 12 comprises a female, internally threaded barrel and a male, externally threaded screw, and wherein each of the barrel and the screw have upper 18 and lower 19 heads providing the upper 14 and lower bearing surfaces 15, the lower head 19 and the lower bearing surface 15 are shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
-
The dome skirt 4 encloses the outer, upper edge 20 of the upper transparent plane sheet 5 but does not extend far enough downwards towards the roof surface (not shown) to fully cover and enclose the end surface 21 of the transparent plane sheet 6 closest to the roof surface (not shown), and the end surface 21 is for that reason not sufficiently protected by the dome skirt 4. For this reason, a separate auxiliary skirt 22 is provided that is not a part of and separate from the roof dome 3 and any of the transparent plane sheets 5, 6. The auxiliary skirt 22 extends from between the dome skirt 4 and an end surface 23 of the upper transparent plane sheet 5, and downwards towards the roof surface so that the auxiliary skirt 22 encloses the end surface 21 of the transparent plane sheet 6 closest to the roof surface and thereby protecting the end surface 21 from impact by the environment.
-
The auxiliary skirt 22 is clamped to the panel 2 and thereby to the glazing frame by means of the plurality of fasteners 11 passing through openings (not shown) of the auxiliary skirt 22 and clamping the auxiliary skirt 22 between a lower side surface 24 of the roof dome 3 and a spacer 25 provided between on top of the upper side surface 27 of the upper transparent plane sheet 5 to provide room for a gasket 26. Another gasket 26' is situated between the lower outer surface 17 of the panel and the glazing frame, i.e. the top frame 9, or the second frame profile 30.
-
The auxiliary skirt 22 extends towards the roof surface beyond the outer, lower edge 28 of the transparent plane sheet 6 closest to the roof surface by 10 mm to ensure the protection of the transparent plane sheet 6.
-
The outer, lower edge 28 of the transparent plane sheet 6 closest to the roof surface is closer to the roof surface than a lowermost edge 29 of the dome skirt 4.
-
The minimum distance Lm between the top frame 9 being a part of the glazing frame and the auxiliary skirt 22 is 8 mm in order to reduce the circulation of air between the auxiliary skirt 22 and the transparent plane sheets 5, 6 for improving the thermal insulating characteristics of the roof skylight 1.
-
In Fig. 2, the cross-section of a second embodiment of a roof skylight 1 quite similar to the first embodiment of Fig. 1 is shown. The difference is that the glazing frame further comprises a second frame profile 30 situated between the top frame 14 and the panel 2, so that the panel 2 is attached to the second frame profile 30, which is fixed to the top frame 14 by means of fixing screws 31. The second frame profile 30 has along the side of the curb 7 shown a hinge 32 allowing the panel 2 to be switched between an open and a closed position of the roof skylight 1.
-
In the third embodiment of the roof skylight 1 shown in cross-section in Fig. 3, the auxiliary skirt 122 is mounted to the panel 2 by being clamped between two of the transparent plane sheets 5, 6.
-
In the fourth embodiment of the roof skylight 1 shown in Fig. 4 in cross-section, the auxiliary skirt 222 is mounted to the panel 2 by being clamped between the lower outer surface 17 of the panel 2 and the lower head 19 of the hollow binding screw 12.
