Definitions
- the invention refers to household chemicals and is a vegetal - amino acid composition and its application for preparation of liquid care products for delicate fabrics (silk, wool, cashmere), such as environment-friendly liquid detergent and fabric softener.
- the invention relates to the vegetal - amino acid composition and is composed of components A and B, where:
- Shikimic acid of vegetable origin is one of such substances. It represents small molecule, which can be produced in the result of chemical synthesis, microbial fermentation and extraction from specific plant species, in particular, from star anise seeds (Latin: Illicium verum ) . Despite the fact that it is present is a large number of microorganisms and fungi, it is an intermediate metabolite of biosynthetic reactions, and in these reactions, it is presented in very low concentrations. Shikimic acid in significant amount can be found in star anise and its allies only [ Ghosh S. et al., Production of shikimic acid //Biotechnology advances, 2012 ] . The use of shikimic acid in household chemicals has not been disclosed.
- arginine amino acid Another component, which is widely presented in nature and which at the same time can be potentially used in garment care products, is arginine amino acid. It represents small molecule with weak alkaline properties, the use of which, in combination with other amino acids, is widely spread in hair care products, but not in household chemicals. Arginine is widely used in such areas as protein refolding, solubilization of proteins and small molecules, column chromatography and viral inactivation [ Arakawa T., Kita Y. Multi-faceted arginine: mechanism of the effects of arginine on protein, 2014 ] . In conjunction of household chemicals, arginine-based surface-active agents (SAAs) are known.
- SAAs surface-active agents
- arginine-based SAAs single-chain, dimeric and arginine-based glycerolipidic conjugates. All these classes represent substances, different from monocomponent arginine in their chemical properties [ Singh A., Tyagi V. K. Arginine based novel cationic surfactants: a review, 2014 ] .
- human hair and animal hair from which woolen fabric are made (mainly, sheep hair), they have a number of differences.
- merino wool made of wool-producing merino sheep, has hair cuticle one cell layer wide, while human hair cuticle is made of 10-30 layers [ Jones L. N. Hair structure anatomy and comparative anatomy //Clinics in dermatology, 2001 ] .
- wool has less regular cuticle structure and looks less smooth than human hair.
- Medulla the central part of hair, is merely present in wool, but is expressly evident in human hair. In particular, this is related to differences in hair diameter: human hair is "thicker" than wool.
- wool has significant advantages over human hair in relation to the parameters, critical in fabric manufacturing; it is softer, more elastic, holds water, moisture and colorants better, has larger gloss and is less prone to ignition [ Structure of wool and its differentiation from hair fibre, https://sites.google.com/site/viveklpm/wool/structure-of-wool-and-its-differentiation-from-hair-fibre ] .
- arginine being the basic amino acid
- Arginine has positive effective charge, i.e. it is in charged state and is able to bind with negatively charged molecules at pH ⁇ 9, which corresponds to most garment care products [ Lewis C. et al. Effect of pH on the binding of sodium, lysine, and arginine Counterions to l-Undecyl Leucinate micelles //Journal of Surfactants and Detergents. - 2016. - T. 19. - No. . 6. - C. 1175-1188 ] .
- arginine forms a special stoichiometric complex with shikimic acid and operates under the "anchor" principle, i.e. it binds negatively charged molecules on wool surface with shikimic acid. Apart from the fact that arginine is able to bind with negatively charged groups on protein surface, it also contributes to protein refolding [ Arakawa T., Kita Y. Multi-faceted arginine: mechanism of the effects of arginine on protein, 2014 ] .
- the authors of the present invention propose the following hypothesis: a complex of arginine and shikimic acid exhibit synergic activity in relation to woolen fabric restoration at the ultrastructural level by restoring protein molecule structure.
- shikimic acid being highly hydrophilic, is hygroscopic, i.e. is able to absorb moisture.
- the substances used to color fabrics are water soluble, this refers to additional effect of the complex, which is retaining fabric color, which preserves the initial appearance of fabrics and increases wear period.
- such or similar properties for garment care products in relation to the complex of arginine and shikimic acid have not been shown, which emphasizes its uniqueness and innovation.
- Shikimic acid and arginine are declared as one of Michael acceptor junction and linker, correspondingly, in Patent Application US20190240126 (KEMON SPA [IT] ).
- This patent application covers cosmetic composition for topical application, containing 30-95% w/w of active component, to restructure and protect hair and scalp by restoring disulfide bonds, which are broken in damaged hair and scalp, while the specified active agent contains mixture of at least one acyclic terpene and at least two Michael acceptor junctions and 5-30% w/w of at least one linker per the weight of the specified active component and at least one specified linker.
- composition of the active complex in addition to shikimic acid and arginine (as one of the linkers), one more acceptor junction (sorbic acid) and one acyclic terpene must be present.
- This composition is designed especially for hair, which, as it was described earlier, has a significant number of differences from wool.
- the patent application specified the range of working pH from 2 to 10
- pH is not specified in the section with the embodiments of the invention. Due to this, it is impossible to certainly decide on the range of working pH values.
- most shampoos and conditioners have pH ⁇ 5, which can be the base of interpretation of the use of the given composition in hair care products.
- Arginine is used not only in hair care products, but also in compositions designed for garment care.
- the use of arginine in the composition for stain removal from fabrics with surface active agent is described in Patent Application WO2014095617 (UNILEVER PLC [GB] ). Nonetheless, this patent application does not disclose arginine composition to restore fabrics, in particular, delicate fabrics.
- the effect of the composition is limited to removal of stains of lipid rii, as the embodiments in the patent application included samples of fabrics with beef fat stains as test samples.
- arginine is also described in Patent Application WO2004038084 (international patent application, CLOROX CO [US], ADAIR MARTHA J [US]7) in the composition, where arginine acts as chlorine and/or active oxygen absorbent or neutralizer.
- the composition is presented in liquid, liquid gel or gel form and is designed for use in fabric care, in particular, to protect fabrics from color damage.
- the formulation of the declared composition is as follows: (a) from about 0.001% to about 5% by weight of one or more enzymes for fabric care, which are effective in prevention of pilly garneting, stain formation and other damages to fibers during laundry; (b) from about 0.001% to about 20% by weight of one or more UV-screening agents, where one or several UV-screening agents are for bleaching and prevention of photo-discoloration and other damage to fabrics by light; (c) from approximately 0.001% to approximately 60% by weight of one or more surface-active dispersing, emulsifying and/or solubilizing agents; (d) from about 0% to about 20% be weight of one or more dye transfer inhibitors, agents, preventing reprecipitation, or colorant sequestrants; (e) from about 0% to about 20% by weight of one or more colorants, color pigments and fabric color fixer or protector for fabric finish; (f) from about 0% to about 5% by weight of one or more textile lubricants and/or fabric softeners.
- Arginine in its turn, is declared as chlorine and/or active oxygen absorbent or neutralizer, which act as agents, contributing to fabric discoloration.
- the embodiments include the studies of tensile strength, but not fabric discoloration inhibition or fiber restoration of delicate fibers at the microscopic level.
- arginine is also declared in garment care conditioning products ( US6750189 (PROCTER & GAMBLE [US] ) and WO2016106362 (international patent application, INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES INC. [US] )).
- arginine is declared not as a separate component, but in the composition of homo-/cocondensate, copolymer of amino acids or cross-linked polymer, the properties of which can be different from unbound arginine due to their physical and chemical nature, in particular, dimension and composition of molecules.
- arginine is declared as a stabilizing agent in the formulation of the composition: from 1 to 30% of conditioning agent for fabrics, from 0.1% to 30% of the capsule, having oil kernel and wall of the capsule, where the oil kernel contains active material and the capsule wall, incapsulating oil kernel, and 20 ppm or more of the stabilizing agent.
- the active material is flavoring agent, designed to eliminate odor, or a combination of them.
- Kitchen spray (Kitchen Cleaner, Happy Elephant, SARAYA) is available in the market. Its formulation includes surfactants (1% sophorolipids), arginine (additive), ethanol (stabilizer), citric acid (pH adjustor). In the manufacturer's website this product is promoted as an effective and safe product, composed of food ingredients, to remove stains of lipid nature, streak-free. Despite the presence of garment care products in the Happy Elephant product line (https://happyelephant.info/products/kitchencleaner.html), the formulation of them does not include arginine and shikimic acid, which shows that the manufacturer does not use arginine and shikimic acid as functional additive to restore fabrics. At the same time, the function of arginine in the kitchen spray is not clarified.
- the acquired effect is more probably explained by the formation of stoichiometric complex, composed of arginine and shikimic acid, which is bound with wool surface under the "anchor" principle, fixing these components on hair. Being attached and integrated into wool fibers at the ultrastructural level, the complex contributes to the restoration of woolen fabrics, as well as sustaining colorant molecules on the surface of woolen and other fabrics.
- the complex Due to the fact that the complex includes shikimic acid and arginine - the substances, which are normally contained in living organisms, the complex is environmentally friendly and safe for skin in stated concentrations. Moreover, arginine and shikimic acid have positive impact on skin; in particular, products, containing these components, contribute to the reduction of atopic dermatitis symptoms [ Batory M., Rotsztejn H. Shikimic acid in the light of current knowledge, 2022 ; Zhang Y. et al. Skin care product rich in antioxidants and antiinflammatory natural compounds reduces itching and inflammation in the skin of atopic dermatitis patients, 2022 ] .
